hello people, i'm 14 years old (boy) and i am from the netherlands and i am a furry i dont have a fursuite because it can be quite expensive and i will grow out of it fast so i will have to wait until i stop growing to make / buy one.

i am almost sure my family and friend will think im crazy if i told them that i am a furry.

and i even think they don't know what it is.

is there a way to see if other people around me are furries too.

or is there a way to give people small hints so that they wont think i am a furrie emidiantly and that it becomes public in a few hours but that they first going to search about it and maybe going to be a furry too or come talk to me about what it is and that they understand what and how i feel.

i have absolutly no problem telling people that i would love it to dress in a fursuits and go to meetings and fantasy fairs (as it is called in my country search for: elf and fantasy fair nederland)

but i just want one or more persons that understand me and where i can share idea's with and talk about other furry stuff (meetings suits etc.)

and when i am old enought to go to fantasy fairs / meetings with.

it would really help me if i could get some sites of you guys or some tips how to meet or see if other furries exist in my school or elsewhere in my area from my own age.

thanks for reading my question and i hope somebody can help me.

(you can also private contact me on Deviantart as: furwolf100)

We get this question frequently. In short: Don't say 'I am a furry'. Say "I like this furry comic book." "I'm interested in this furry convention." "I like this video with the fox costume in it." Telling people that you like something, especially something specific, is a lot easier for them to understand and a lot less challenging to them. "I am a furry" is a statement of identity, "I like furry" is a statement of preference.

Mentioning small things in a casual way is how to do it. And relax about it; your family will almost certainly not thing you are weird for developing your own tastes as long as you don't present it as a weird thing. You are at the age where children develop their own styles and tastes, and what parents want to know most about your interests and activities is that you're safe, choosing things smartly, not spending too much of their money, and that it's not much different than the wacky things they liked when they were teenagers. (Hint: ask them about the stuff they liked at their age. You'll be amazed that your parents used to like cool stuff.)

thanks for this comment.

it's probably the best i got with a great advise too.

friends and other people at my school already know i draw wolves, foxes and other stuff at home and sometimes at school.

i never had any rude or mean comments on it so it should be fine by now.

maybe one day somebody will ask about it and understand what its all about and maybe become a furry too hopefully.

as i already said im only 14 so i still have alot of time to discover all the things about the furry fandom and see where it goes.

and with my family it should be fine too i always go with my dad to fantasy fairs (as its called here in the netherlands) and we always have alot of fun looking at the art and all the costumes there.

thanks again for the awesome comment i now have a few different awnsers that can help me for atleast a few years.

If you and your Dad go to Fantasy fairs currently, then I think you might well suggest to him, "Perhaps one year we can try our a Furry convention like Eurofurence or Furry Weekend Holland? We need to plan it well, and there's no hurry, but I'm interested." http://en.wikifur.com/wiki/Convention has a list of some European conventions; I'm not at all sure which are closest to you.

I thought EF (and maybe FWH) were 18+; don't have time to search for the post (by you?) to that effect though...

Yes, EF requires an attendee to be 18 years of age or older.  There are other Furry events in continental Europe but I do not know much about them.

Hello skywere, I believe I replied to you yahoo answers post, and what a suprise when I came on here and saw it again on the anthrocon forums! If you look back at my comment on yahoo answers I gave you a link to a few friends of mine on Facebook who also lived in the Netherlands. I was in your situation too at one point, and what I found to be the best way to find people near me who were furries was to friend furry after furry on Facebook, and then friend their friends and so on, and from doing this, I have already met 3 people who are furries within 20 miles of where I live! You never know, Trying this technique with the people I recommended to you might work. Just a suggestion though. Sorry if this sounded weird or didn't make sense, I'm not that good at this type of stuff haha

Hello skywere.

I think it would be wise to look for furries in your area online first. If you have trouble finding furries online you could make subtle statments as to your being a furry, as was said earlier.

I'm the eager young wolf pup who wants to know everything and wants everyone to know him.

Sorry if I ramble, sorry if I get off topic and sorry if I goof around a bit too much.

I hate to be alone, but I don't like being too close to anyone.
