Super-special-awesome edit: The tournament will be held on Saturday, from 3 to 5PM, in room 306. You can preview the rules right now by scroll waaaay down towards the bottom of the discussion. I hope to see you all there. Hooray, it's apparently okay for me to discuss this. Also, I figured this could use its own thread for discussing the tournament itself. Alright, folks, there's going to be a Guitar Hero tournament at AC this year. Not sure what date and time yet, but it will be held in the video game room. I myself love Guitar Hero, and I want people to get excited over this, and I also want to hear your opinions and ideas. The current idea for rules is basically a simple tournament bracket. Everyone gets paired up with somebody, and these two people decide on a song and difficulty they'll play. They either go head-to-head in two player, or they take a turn with whomever getting the higher score moves on. Originally, the idea was for whomever getting the highest score on a song of their choice wins, period. Unfortunately, the average score for songs can vary wildly due to simple factors like length and an abundance of chords, so this was thrown out. Now, here's where I want to get some help from you folks. We obviously need equipment, consisting of guitar controllers, copies of the game, and consoles. I myself will bring along my 360 and all equipment including guitar controllers. I see some people are already volunteering to bring their equipment to the con, and that's great. If they'd like to allow us to use this gear for the tournament, I'd be incredibly grateful. The other thing I need is ideas and critiques. If you have any ideas for the tournament's rules, please speak out. If you have any ideas in general about the tournament, questions, or general support, I'd love to hear it in this thread. Thanks, and I hope to see plenty of people ready to rock come July. |

You could have seperate tournaments for the different difficulty levels. Thay way, the scores could stay consistant, and you'd just have multiple winners.

What do you mean? The problem with my original idea was that scores aren't going to be consistent. A long song like, say, Free Bird will almost always net more points than a shorter song, even on the same difficulty.
If you mean four separate brackets, I'd rather not. I imagine this will be hard enough to organize as it is. Plus, to be honest, I'm not willing to spend $320 or more on four brand new copies of Guitar Hero 3 that I'll never even get to play.

I'll be in it just to play. I'm decent (Expert), I just hate waiting in long lines to play one set of songs (a la DDR at Otakon).

Not to sound like people who bitch about details, but I'd prefer it if the tournament was on the PS2 version of Guitar Hero 2. I've tried the 360 version, and personal preference, having to deal with the different-shaped head caused problems in my performance. Not saying it's that way for everyone, but personal preference for me.
I guess we'll hammer out details once it's closer to the con. I was hoping to do some Cooperative action with my wingman/co-guitarist, but he won't be making it due to lack of funds.

Assuming that someone brings along the PS2 version(s) and lets us use them for the tournament, I don't see any reason to prevent someone from playing on the version they prefer. It doesn't look like we'll be missing the PS2 version at the con, so you should be fine.

Definitely not, since I'll have mine and (most likely) two guitar controllers with me. Red SG for me, original sticker-whore controller for the game room.

permalinkI've been a TO for a number of DDR tournaments so if you need a hand, I can pitch in.
Here's what I can come up with off the top of my head:
* No qualifier. Songs are way too long to have someone sit around for hours waiting for people to qualify and then find out that 25% of your contestants are no-shows. Best to wait until the actual event.
* Allow Hyper Speed only if both players agree on it.
* Play in Pro Face-off Mode so two players can play the same notes at the same time.
* If there's no fully unlocked savefile, use the Unlock Everything code: BYOROY RYRYRYRYRYRY. (I don't know if this unlocks Pro Face-off Mode, though)
* Anyone who signed up should play Tonight I'm Gonna Rock You Tonight on Medium (It's the shortest song at 2:37, and most players should have no problem with 292 notes, especially with time to practice if they haven't played before). If we get 3 TVs and move efficiently, that means roughly 32 players can play in an hour. For our sanity, we should cap it somewhere around there.
* Highest 16 scores move on to a seeded single elimination paired bracket. In the past, double elimination tournaments take away WAY too much time from the con. Each player picks a song on Hard difficulty, highest seed choosing first. The player with the highest score in each song wins the song. In the event of a tie (each player wins 1 song), a judge will pick out a tiebreaker. Best 2 out of 3 moves on. This should take about 40 minutes.
* The remaining 8 pair up and do the same thing on Expert difficulty (unless they mutually agree to play a song on Hard). I'd recommend that a player can't choose a song that he/she has already chosen. Same goes with the remaining 4. These two rounds should take about 40 minutes.
* If there's still a big enough crowd for the finals, it would be neat to let the audience pick out the last songs.
* I suggest we ban Freebird (over 9 minutes long) or make it only playable in the finals, simply because of how long it is... or even make Freebird THE finals. Same goes for War Pigs (7 minutes). I wouldn't be against banning Jordan either (1,801 notes) or saving it for forcing the finalists to undergo the torture of it.
* I don't know how failing goes (never actually managed PF mode in GH2), but the usual fair way in DDR is that the first person to fail a song loses, but if both players fail, the person who chose the song loses (because this usually means s/he was bullying his way with a few seconds of surviving a song and couldn't even beat his/her own challenge).
All in all, this means it'd be going for about 2 hours and 40 minutes if everything runs smoothly. It won't, so hopefully it can start early or wrap it up in 3 hours.
If you'd like assistance with running the tourney, feel free to contact me at .
EDIT: I'd also ban the use of killswitch-modded guitars!

What?

What?

permalinkHyper speed is like 2x on DDR.
Killswitch-modded guitars modify the select button so that it triggers a strum. It is then flipped around with the select button being where the start button was for easy access.

Thank you for this. I wasn't planning on doing any sort of qualifier, but I do want to have people sign up beforehand, so I can have some good idea as to how many people will be joining in. You're right, there is the constant issue of time, and right now I have no clear idea how long this could really take nor how many would even opt in.
I do think you have a good idea with everyone playing just one song, and the top few moving on to elimination. Assuming we're short on guitars and television sets, or a ton of people sign up, I'll probably do it.

Just a suggestion, from me.
You might as well consider banning downloaded (song pack) content. Assuming not everybody has yet purchased them from the X-box Live Marketplace, and would be a huge hassle wiping saved data [if possible...?] from one X-box 360 to another, not to mention completely discriminating the PS-2 version of GH2. And what of the song deferential between the two (PS-2 and X-box 360) versions, knowing that the 360 version has additional songs over the PS2?
Also, I could bring one of my T.V.'s, my X-box 360 and (360) version of GH2, along with a guitar - possibly two, if I can find a spare controller cheaper. I'll have a firmer answer when the Con gets closer.

permalinkSounds good. All you'd need to do is say that only songs that are on the PS2 version are allowed. That way the PS2 players aren't discriminated against, and the xBox players know what songs to practice.
The only problem, then, would be if someone wants to use a PS2 guitar and the opponent wants to use a xBox guitar. If that comes up, then... uh... lower seed chooses the system. That sounds fair.

I don't have any of the DLC packs on my 360 at the moment, but why ban them? Aren't they all just songs from GH1 so far?
And thank you very much for offering to bring your equipment. The more people are willing to donate their equipment, the better.

permalinkOh, I don't have the 360 version, so I can't verify, but if they're all GH1 songs, then I think it'd be fair to include them, unless the lower seed chooses to play on PS2.

Come, travel to a new dimension that is "Wikipedia".
That should just about clarify my prior post. The (three) downloadable song packs have nothing spectacularly new - only particular songs from the first Guitar Hero game. Unless somebody is going to bother bringing both GH and GH2 copies for the PS-2, then I'm pressing my suggestion for the ban on the Dl'able packs. Additionally, by reviewing the data provided from Wikipedia, you'll notice the (10) extra songs on the X-box 360 (version) portion of the table. The PS-2 version -WILL NOT- have these extra songs - compared to the 360's, and those songs should be banned, unless both players agree to play on the same console, or avoid using the 360 version completely. This tid-bit can be used as an alternative, however. The extra songs (exclusive to the 360) could be nice to have a little more variety in the set-lists. I'm merely trying to point these things out, so such issues can be anticipated for when a problem would arise.
IMHO, I'll be happy with any form of ruling, and I'll be there just to play for the fun of it.

I'm sorry, but I still don't understand why we need to ban it, nor the extra 360 songs. If anything, I think it'd be a plus. It means we'd have an additional option for, say, any situation where people want to play a GH1 song, but we're short a copy of GH1.
And let me make this clear: If two players are going head-to-head in either face-off or taking turns during the tournament, they will have to play the same song, on the same difficulty. What song and difficulty that is should be decided by those two players. If not, then I or someone else who's helping run the tournament can intervene and come with a quick decision.
Hopefully, though, we won't have to do that and people will take a similar stance as your's and participate in this primarily for the fun factor.

Just got my paws on a second Xploder controller several suns ago, and played a few rounds of Co-op/Face-off with friends; pretty frickin' sweet, if you ask me. *Toothily grins*
Any specific times this tourny will start?
Thirty more days left to get practice in!!!

Heck, I've been practicing like crazy, even though I'm not a contestant! I've also been considering picking up an extra GH1 & GH2 set for the PS2, just in case.
Unfortunately, though, I don't know what date & time the tourny is set, yet. However, I will definitely post here/edit the original post when I do find out.

Play in Pro Face-off Mode so two players can play the same notes at the same time. Easiest way.
We can do Medium first round, Hard second round, and Expert for the last few matches, OR one person chooses the song, the other chooses the difficulty.

I have no problems with any of the downloadable/original content on the 360 version. I'll go so far as to say that Possum Kingdom is the most badasserest of the exclusive songs. I'm just saying that as far as using the exclusives in the tournament, it just seems a tad unfair if someone sprang one on someone who cut their teeth on the PS2 versions. Personally, I don't like the feel of the Xplorer controller compared to the SG.
This is me assuming that it'll be best two-out-of-three, like the DDR tournament, where each player gets to pick one song, and a third is agreed upon/chosen at random. I just see it like if a tournament was held using DDR Supernova (or Extreme JP like everyone seems to love), and for the second person's song they asked to switch to playing Ultramix 3 and home-built pads. Completely doable, if you have any skills whatsoever at DDR, but giving an advantage to someone who's had the time to practice on both that version and those pads.
But definitely not banning them for free play. That'd be pointless.

I am all over this concept--I've actually been waiting for it for some time.
Personally, I would see it as Elimination style, at least initially: while the pool of players is much larger, have them do Pro-Style on the same song, same difficulty, then eliminate the lower scorer (or send them to a Loser's Bracket, but that's up to you). No qualifiers unless there's tonnes of entrants, as that really slows the process down, but would be necessary if you end up with like 75+ interested competitors.
(My personal tastes tend to lean towards a Hard and an Expert brackets, but I understand that's a logistical nightmare, and I certainly understand logistical nightmares.)
You may want to pre-determine the final songs for weeding down the brackets, just to add a small element of surprise. I've seen this in DDR tourneys left and right.
I can provide a PS2 with Guitar Hero and Guitar Hero II. I can bring my SG as well, but I would highly prefer that I'm the only one who uses it in most cases--it's decidedly, ah, broken-in, and is steadily approaching the end of its life after hundreds of hours of play.
Also have a save game for both games with most if not all of the songs unlocked. (I skipped Yes We Can; can you blame me?)
I call Thunderhorse on Hard. Bring it!

Count me in as a participant, but I may have to use a controller other than my own, since I've recently been experiencing a minor problem with mine. Whenever I strum upwards, the bar seems to spring back too much and causes a downwards strum. Is there any way to fix this?

It's apparently a common thing with most of the guitar controllers. One of the better ways to counteract this is to hold onto the strum bar and strum up and down that way, holding it as if it were a guitar pick.

I looked at the guts of my controller tonight, and have found that the strum bar is a simple switch loosely suspended above two buttons. If there was a way to make the strum bar more rigid, it might solve the problem. It would be a bit harder to strum, sure, but it would be more accurate.
Just a thought.

Bah, I hate spreading bad news. Might as well get it over with, being that I have very little time to explain this.
Due to recent (personal) events, I'll be virtually ...UNABLE... to bring anything that's tremendously bulky. Since I'm catching a flight and hitching a ride with my tiger friend to-and-from Anthrocon, I just can't take along many things, aside the essentials. Sorry about this, as I would have brought such things if my car wasn't so unreliable and have no traveling companion... at least, that was my primary plan. Speaking of plans, mine are totally yiffed-up thanks to those said recent evets, but I'm thankful that I can still make it.
I'm still interested on participating, or better yet, help coordinate the event, that is, if this tourny is still on.

That's fine, man. I understand, and don't worry about it. The tournament is a go, yes. I've been meaning to update the OP, and now I've finally gotten my (only) chance. I could use more people to help run the tournament, though, so if you'd like to help out with that, I'd be really grateful.
And Milt, that's okay if you don't bring your PS2. We need controllers and copies of the games more than we need consoles, most likely.

Okay. Here's the pretty-much-final rules, unless there's something I missed, or something that's really muggy. This is coming straight from the same sheet that'll be up in the video game room.
Guitar Hero Tournament
Rules
1.The tournament will be held from 3 to 5PM on Saturday in room 306. Within room 306 during the convention, there will be a sign-up sheet. Simply fill out your entry on the sheet in order to participate in the tournament.
2.Due to time constraints, the tournament will be limited to the first fifty (50) people who apply and show up. We will have more than fifty sign-up entries in case someone doesn't appear when the tournament is being held, but if we have more than fifty participants show it, it will work as first-come, first-serve with whomever signed up first gaining priority.
3.The tournament will be divided up into two sections. In the first section, everyone will play one song. This song will be Tonight I'm Gonna Rock You Tonight, and it will be on Medium difficulty. If this is a problem for enough people, we will change the song or difficulty to something that pleases the participants. The top sixteen (16) scores will move on to the second portion of the tournament.
4.The second portion of the tournament is standard bracket elimination. Players will compete head-to-head in Pro Face-Off mode on hard or (if both players agree) Expert difficulty. Hyper Mode is also available if both players agree. The players will play against each other, best two out of three. The player with the higher seed score will choose the first song, and the second player will choose the second song. Whomever has the higher score wins the song. In the event of a tie, someone from the staff will make a decision on the last song. Whomever wins best of three will move on, while the loser will be dropped from the tournament.
5.Freebird and War Pigs will not be allowed during the tournament, due to their length. However, songs from any version of Guitar Hero (besides the two mentioned) will be allowed.
6.The winner of the tournament is the last one still remaining after all the other players have been elminiated, and will win the prize: a copy of Guitar Hero 3, for whatever system they'd like, when it releases.
Rules of Conduct
During the tournament, one rule is largely in effect: don't be a jerk. This means being a bad sport, insulting other players, breaking equipment, or in part anything that the staff deems to be inappropriate. We will remove someone from the tournament if they are demonstrating poor conduct, and charge them for anything necessary, such as equipment they have broken.

Guitar Hero I may prove to be a problem, given (unless my brain is failing me) it does not have Pro Face-Off Mode.
