Hey fluffy things.

I thought I'd open a thread for any practicing and non practicing martial artists to introduce their martial art side with a post about their martial art; and even for furs who don't study, an opportunity to gain some insight.

Hmm... as for ground rules I was thinking of just keeping this topic focused on promoting one's art to the masses (or at least the furs subscribed to this forum) as opposed to the whole "Oh yeah, well my sensai could beat up your sensei" and "my art's better than your art because..." etc.

Anypoop, I'll finish off with my art Smiling

I've been out of the loop for a while and I'm looking at getting back into it. I'm 31 years old now and I started way back in '90 when I was 14. I got into it when I was just getting into high school, fearful that the next 4 years of my school life were going to be worse than when I was going to public school, as I always seemed to fall victim to the insecurity of bullies.

I started off with Shaolin Kempo Karate, which was a hybrid style of Shotokan, Five animal style Kung Fu and Ju Jitsu. I spent about three and a half years studying it and earned my way up to 3rd Kyu brown belt. The "kyu" was the level of the brown belt, represented by a black stripe, which meant I had 2 more levels (kyu's) to go until my first Kyu, and then I'd be ready for my first "dan" black belt.

Anyways, my instructor ended up moving on to become a physiotherapist and a new instructor came in. But I lost interest fast because I didn't like the way this new guy taught. Oh yeah and being 18 and having a job, seriously cut into my martial arts lessons and I had to move on.

I then moved on to other martial arts, but couldn't find anything as fulfilling as Shaolin Kempo was for me. I tried other styles of Karate and Ju Jitsu and even did some Ninjitsu for a bit but eventually my burn out got a bit too much and I put it on the back burner.

After a few years passed, I was reading an article in a magazine on Systema. I was 21 years old at the time and this strange new style caught my interest and after reading the article, I found that the head school was not too far away from where I lived. So I thought I'd go down and check it out. Well after a couple of trial classes, I was hooked.

I found out that the Russians have had their own martial art for centuries but in 1917 the communist government banned anyone from teaching and/or learning the traditional style (although "somehow" Stalin's body guards were still proficient in the use of Systema, hmmm... I guess the government likes to have all the fun Smiling. Up until the fall of Mikhail Gorbichev, only certain units within Spetsnaz (Russian Special Forces) were taught the ancient fighting techniques (even though it was still unofficially being practiced behind closed iron curtains).

Anypoop, without testing to see if there's a character limit, I'll leave a couple of videos on the style I used to take, and still practice when I have nothing to do around the apartment.

I also practice the arts. I have been in Tae Kwon Do, Ju Jitsu, American Karate system (a cheesy version of shotokan), and most recently Bujinkan *spelling* Ninjitsu. I am working toward mastering 6 weapons. Throwing stars, Nunchakas, blowguns, Katana, Bo staff, and short staffs. Due to my overly busy schedule, and short cash supply I no longer activly attend classes, but I am hoping to get back to them later this year. I broke my first reinforced brick here at my house one month ago.

I had training in traditional Karate and martial arts trained in the US Army... only some of which I remember to this day. My body has long since gotten worse and I'm not as flexible as I used to be.

I do love martial arts in a combination with dancing, though. Quite a show. Smiling

I practiced Tae Kwon Do for about three or four years (I think it was... it may have been longer), but I have admittedly been out of practice for about 3 years. In the years that I practiced Tae Kwon Do I enjoyed it immensely, and worked up to achieve the rank of 1st Dan - first level Black Belt. I mainly studied different moves and forms, and tended to not focus too much on sparring. I didn't dislike sparring, but I was only about 16 years old with full grown adults as my sparring partners. So, even with equipment I occasionally got thrown pretty far across the room. Since Tae Kwon Do is primarily kicking based, I ended up often at an advantage with my kicking range because of my rather long legs. There wasn't anyone really too close my age at my school most of the time unfortunately.

The reason why I had to stop was due to the course load at my high school becoming unreasonably large (Anyone hear of the IB program out there?), then last year, college away from home and a job.

I'm looking into practicing again on my own in some of my spare time. The only problem is I've forgotten many of my forms, some moves, nearly all the Korean names for things, and am less flexible than I was then. I have a video somewhere of my black belt test, so I hopefully can recover a lot of information from that. With some stretching and practice I may feel ready enough to join my college's Tae Kwon Do club.

I also had taken TAE KWON DO (Chung Do Kwan) which is I think is a northern Korean art. We never used weapons but are body as a weapon. I was in it for 2 years and made green belt. Sadly I was really into it until I moved Sad and I almost forgotten all of my forms besides my three no belt forms and white 1 forms. Since we moved in i'm thinking about getting into any arts that come across. There's one down the street near my school that i've been looking at. Mabye i'll go during high school.

Those Russian arts look really cool. I've never seen anything like that before.

Yeah it's a fun and effective system. What makes it different than most other martial arts is that it doesn't have any techniques that you keep practicing over and over again until it becomes part of your muscle memory. It relies mainly on understanding movement, the psychology of fighting and body mechanics.

I found that once you understand the above, you can pretty much work on your own style of combat. Of course you're going to fight very similar as other Systema students because we all have unique similarities in the way we think, breath and move.

Yeah what I also saw is how he could just slip things off and use the other perosn's force against them. Kinda like Judo. That was also cool when he could just move that pole thing when it hit him on the back just with his shoulders.

I do Teppo-do. I've only been doing it for a short while, and don't practice as often as I should because of budgetary constraints. I'm hoping that after AC I'll end up with some excess cash to throw at it.

Excess cash? What's that?

Excess cash is defined as money I have not yet spent on training and ammo.

300 bucks on commissions is silly. That'll get me like, 5 pictures. I could spend that on ammo and get 1000 rounds of 5.56x45 or 1000 rounds of .45 ACP. Then I can take some time to draw myself 5 pictures.
