I've been informed by our webhost that starting at 11 PM on Wednesday, May 30th, the machine that we are hosted on will be taken down for a few hours for a move to a brand new data center. The downtime is expected to be for "3-4 hours". Below are some pictures of the new datacenter. I hope that folks find them educational, or at least amusing: A series of tubes. Electrical conduits, that is: Some customers have started to migrate: Colo Alley. The "cages" seen on either side are separate spaces that are usually leased to a single customer: Cooling system outside the facility. Note the razor wire(!!) on the fence to the left: The full set of pictures can be found on Flickr. If anyone has questions about the move, please let me know, thanks! |

permalinkEver see the movie, "The Shadow"?
Good movie. Takes place in the 1930's, with a type of batman-esque superhero known as "The Shadow". Anyway, he has a series of agents who report to him throughout New York City by dropping notes off in pneumatic tubes all over the city that lead to his basement.
I was watching the movie with Mwaricon, and he made the comment "Hey, it's the early internet!". I of course yelled out, "The internet is a series of tubes!!!". And he never heard the term....so perfect joke lost.

Nooo... not nearly enough geekiness. Add LED lights to the razor wire and have lightsaber-armed guards and you've got yourself a deal.

Too bad the machines look like desktop boxes that use 120 volts AC.
Because getting the power cycles synchronized from multiple generators is a pain.
It'd be nice if all the equipment was 48 volts DC.

I've gotta say tho, after a few weeks in Chicago I stopped being surprised at the sight of razorwire.. The stuff is in every alleyway here.

And, we're back. Total downtime was about 7 hours last night, with service resuming around 8:45 AM EDT this morning.
This is a partial explanation of why the downtime was longer than expected:
Any questions?
