We thought that we had enough rooms, but before we knew it, even the room block at the Marriottt City Center sold out.  We tried to get additional rooms at our hotels but we were not able to at this time.  Thanks to a bit of magic on the part of VisitPittsburgh Housing Services, though, we have added a block of rooms at the breathtaking Wyndham Grand Hotel.

This hotel, one of the city's most precious gems, is located a bit farther away than most folks are used to (about 3/4 of a mile, or about 1.1 km).  They are offering a very affordable rate, however, at $129 per night (plus 14% tax) to make up for it.  Anthrocon is also in discussion with their management about providing a shuttle service, which will likely have a fee associated with it if we are able to arrange it at all.  Please stay tuned for further developments as our chairman continues to try the big-sad-soulful-eyes on them.

We have also been able to add some more 1-bedroom suites to our block at the Doubletree.  If you don't want to walk all the way to the Wyndham and you enjoy living like royalty for a weekend (or have a large number of friends), note that all of the Doubletree suites have sofabeds in the parlor room.

So, if you are still in need of a hotel room, follow the link on our hotel page.  We are quite confident that with the addition of the Wyndham, Anthrocon will have more hotel rooms than it could conceivably need for all of its 5000+ attendees for 2013!

Just think of it this way, Uncle Kage.  Last year we had a 17% growth in attendance.  If we do the same thing this year we will have over 6000 attendees.

Anthrocon does not currently acknowledge the existance of numbers above 5,999. Unless preceeded by a dollar sign.

A few quick notes:

The Wyndham is within the "Free Fare Zone" in Pittsburgh; this means that bus rides within that zone are free until 7pm each day. As best as I can tell from the Pittsburgh Port authority's maps, bus travel from Wyndham-->Convention Center Area embarks at the "Liberty Ave at Gateway #4" bus stop, and Convention Center Area->Wyndham disembarks at the "Liberty Avenue At Wyndham Grand"[*1] bus stop. The 28x Airport Flyer bus runs to the Wyndham, for those flying in.

The fairly-close Gateway light rail station is great for getting to the North Shore, or over to the Steel Plaza station (Near the Doubletree, Omni, and Marriott City Center.). It doesn't approach close enough to the Convention Center to really be worth taking.

You'll be close to Point Park at the Wyndham, and ought to have some FANTASTIC views of the fireworks this year.

The 28X may be one bus, but... it turns at 7th Avenue.  What about buses going all the way up?  To Port Authority Transit!

Con-way: Liberty Ave at Gateway slot #4:  28X, 29, 31, 82, G2, G3, G31, P10, P13.

Liberty Ave at William Penn Pl (the con main hotel): 1, 6, 15, 40, 44, 86, 88, 91, G2, G3, P7, P10, P13, P17, P69.

On the reverse side: Liberty at 10th (infront of Fernandos): 39, 40, 44, 87, P1, P2, P10, P68, P71

Liberty at Wyndham Grand Hotel: 26, 27, 28x, 29, 31, G2, G3, G31, P10 (P13 is stopping here as well)

Common buses between the two?  The G2, G3 (both con-bound); P10, and P13 (both ways; pickup infront of Fernandos).

The G2 and G3 come in from the west and loop at Penn Station (AMTRAK station).

A few questions:... Will shuttle service be avaliable after 7pm and can you give us more details or a link on how to take advantage of the free fare zone, and possibly a map from this new hotel to the convention center so if you had to walk the route or drive (shudder eek) we wouldn't get lost along the way?

Also are they pet friendly like if you were with a service dog, for those with disabilities.

Do they have a wheelchair ramp, what are the rates if parking is avalible and what other perks do they offer, like a gym, swimming pool, do they offer free cookies or is that only exclusive to the doubletree? yumm nom nom and this is the closest possible hotel you could get near the westin, or the one who offered the lowest rates Uncle Kage that you saw that attendees could afford as most are young and college students?

Keep up the great work Uncle Kage you are the best!  It seems we are full to capacity this year but you have found a way to make sure we all have hotel rooms, you rock Kage :)  paw thumbs up

Shuttle:  As mentioned, we have not made any shuttle arrangements and are still in discussion with both the hotel and the city to see what we can offer.

Fare-free zone:  Just get on the bus before 7 PM.  More info at http://www.portauthority.org/paac/FaresPasses/Fares/Zones.aspx#FreeZone

Map:

Pets:  $75 pet fee; pets may not be brought into the convention.  Service dogs are not the same as pets and thus are exempted.

Hotel is fully handicapped-accessible

Parking is $22 per night.

No cookies.  They're not good for you anyway.

This was the closest hotel that (1) had space, (2) offered us a good rate.  It is not known how much thumbscrewing the VisitPittsburgh folks had to do, if any.

You know, I did some fun simple bussiness problems. Like the Reveune Profit of all the hotels. Lets just say the avg is like around $150 (it's just pertend so dont go off on this preview of the sceranio.) So 7 hotels right so, first we take the number of avg. revenue profit of all hotels. Times that bye how many nights this event is happing (4 for intense). $150X4=600. Lets pertend this is the avg. per person attending anthrocon. (We're not inculding tax and other expenses in this problem so get that out of your heads.) so $600 for the avg. person times that by well lets just say (5,000 attendees) not acurate btw. So $600x5000=$3,000,000. 3 mil., 3 mil, that pittsburgh makes off us just attending a event like this. But i heard there suppose to be possibly 6,000 attendees. so $600x6000=$3,600,000. So what is that like a 20% increase? Anyone else noticing that anthrocon in the next few year's is going to triple in attendees size. Now this is all just a pertend secanrio (None of this is fact) but i can tell you this. Pittsburgh makes alot of $$$ from us furs to have fun once a year.

I would immediately cut this number in half on the assumption that the average number of people per room is closer to 2 than to 1 (I would guess that it is more than 2 but that is just a guess).

Add in all of the food and booze that we put away, the things we purchase, taxi and shuttle payments, and all the money that changes hands, and you have an estimated economic impact on the city of about 4.5 million dollars.

This figure from the City of Pittsburgh itself.

Probably not this year. If Anthrocon grows at the same rate it did last year (17%0, we'll have around 6100. If we do reach 6100 and the rate of increase continues at the same rate, we'll break 7000 in 2014.

(What was that line about wanting to run a small furcon, Kage?)

The distance seems about equal to the distance between one convention I attended and the hotel
I stayed in for it, which was not an official hotel for the con but was the closest with
available rooms. I walked to the convention each day, and was able to walk back but ended
up hailing taxis mainly because I couldn't FIND the hotel when I was tired and it was dark.

Attendees might consider taxis late at night for the same reasons.
(Heck, I was tired trudging to the Doubletree sometimes because I didn't rest enough before
returning to my room sometimes.)

On an unrelated subject,
the last I heard,
service dogs are not allowed to be restricted from anyplace humans are allowed,
and that's Federal law. I had a friend who had a service dog companion,
and she carried a copy of the legal documentation on her in case anyone needed
to be shown that in black-and-white.
(I don't know what the paper looked liked because it never came up.)

There are certain caveats to that, Blackjack, but those are irrelevant to this dicussion.

As Kage mentioned: There is a distinct difference between a trained Service Animal and a household pet. Service animals are fine at Anthrocon. Pets are not permitted in Anthrocon convention space, and each hotel has its own policy regarding pets that must be adhered to.

Agreeing with you also....

Although we all (or mostly) love animals and like many pets,
there's a big difference between "animal friend I consider family who means a lot to me
and vice versa"

and "trained professional animal whose job it is to provide
service and is recognized by legal authorities to do so."

AC'ers might all want to meet your pet,
but it's a legal nightmare for AC and the locations,
and a practical nightmare for both-
which is why it's just plain NOT ALLOWED to bring a pet
to any convention area,
period-end-of-discussion.

I really wish my dad had not left his job as environmental services manager at the Wyndham now.  I know our family is better off and he is far more sane, but I would have absolutely loved to subject him to the shenanigans that are Anthrocon first-hand rather than just hearing about my time there each year!

Was asked by Stakie in a sep. thread about parking for Wyndham; saw on their site self parking or valet ($20, 22 or something) but I mentioned

there's a garage at 126 6th St., maybe halfway or so between this hotel and the Con. Note the bus routes, but even if you're just walking

from the garage to the Con it's maybe a half-mile, do-able. and so on
