Through the tireless efforts of Jaime, our furry-friendly convention services manager, we have won approval to post door signs, provided they are not affixed to the door or to the wall. That means that doorknob-hangers are permitted, but please, no tape or gum or glue. When you see her at the con, be sure to thank Jaime for helping us to continue this long-time tradition. |

Wow, I completely did not expect the hotel to budge. Thanks Jaime for pulling it off.

permalinkActually guys, I just thought of a sweet idea that might just work for us to make a large doorsign and still play by the rules.
Kage, what if we were to make a large flat hook that goes right over the top of the door and stays in place even when closed. the sign is just attached by gravity and it can be removed at any time. hmmm, I wonder if they sell things like these at home depot >.>

permalinkWell, since Uncle Kage said
and you asked about a door sign that is not affixed to the door or to the wall, and uses no tape, gum or glue,
do you really need him to respond again?
I think his only comment would be a reminder to not scratch the door with your rig, and make sure it won't fall on someone's head when housekeeping comes to make up the beds.
(Then again, he may say otherwise.)

permalinkI suppose if one took banner paper, or just a roll of plain or printed wrapping paper, ran it from inside the room under the door and over the top of the door, taping one end of the paper loop to the other end, that would be ok.
The paper would have to be approximatly 14'3" X 30", and be fairly strong.

permalinkI should add the following caveats:
The sign should be completed before being hung, or possibly attach a thick backing material to the paper.
Many markers can "bleed-through" leaving interesting colors on the door. Pens and pencils can scatch lasting testiment to your work. Paint can and does spill.

permalinkNo, OVER the door is right out. Nothing that the door will close on.
Its the door handle or nothing

permalinkIt doesn't say that anywhere, yet. The printed rules are still being firmed up, but in essence, that's what the rule will end up being.

hmmm... not to aggravate the situation and get everyone's hopes up, but would it be possible to present such a door hanger to both a member of the con staff(so the con staff would be able to know what devices were rejected by the hotel and which ones were approved and be able to relay this info to the fuzzy masses) and a staff member of the hotel, possibly Jamie as she is in charge of con-hotel relations?
We could use this year as a test run to give the people who thought up the idea a chance to show some examples of the device and next year if the hotel approves the idea(possibly one of the ideas could be approved while the rest are tossed out completely) and allows such a device to be used, then it could be used in tandem or as an alternative to door knob hangers.
If the hotel says no, then the subject gets dropped and nobody brings it up again at all, or risk making an angry Kage.
I say this not to cause trouble, but to simply explore the possibility and because I was told there was no such thing as a stupid question. Though.... working in Retail has shown me that there is indeed such a thing as a stupid question. Either way, Im simply hoping there would be a way to explore this concept somewhat without completely tossing the idea before its even considered.
Yes, if you are wondering, if you cant spare a staff member to be there when the hotel looks over the devices, Id volunteer for the job. I got a digital camera I can use to take pics of the ones the hotel OKs too. Can also take pics of the ones the hotel says no to.
If you were wondering about the possibility of the doors getting scratched by our "testing" of these things, I got that covered. We simply dont use a door for the testing of the items in question. Use something else like a thick peice of cardboard. Its more brittle than a thick door and if it can hold the harness without any scratches or damage, then a thick hotel door wouldnt have any trouble.

permalinkNo. We pissed them off last year with the door signage, so this year we are playing STRICTLY by their rules.
If all goes well this year, perhaps next year we can explore a few options.
The hard and fast mantra is "Door Handle or Nothing"

Definitely keep the hotel folks happy and maybe impress them how easily, and completely, a concern can be addressed. It may be a couple years to outgrow the convention space. Making door handle cards available is a nicely proactive solution. I'll keep that in mind should the topic come up in conversation.
Future ideas? How about two equal sized (ie equal weight) pieces of light foam core with a piece of ribbon at each top corner? One piece on each side of the door and plan the length of the ribbon so that the view hole and room number aren't obscured. Plenty of time till next year for ideas.

I don't think we will outgrow this space for many many many years. Considering we are in 1 of 3 halls, the smallest of said three, and IF, ohh if we ever out grow the largest of halls there, they can join halls together. Its a huge place, we'll be here a long long time *hopes*
Soooo, that said, be nice to the hotel ppls and do what they ask, we have a long relationship ahead, lets fill it with hugs and other fuzzy stuffs =)

"Me no can put sign on door .. me seeking revenge.. me will rip the 50$-a-piece from door fronts argh!"
that's the mental image I had when I heard the story..

permalinkFor those of you who didn't hear last time,
shortly after the '06 AC, Uncle Kage said that someone (or some people?) had ripped the number off their door, which the convention budget had to pay.
(They had to pay the cost of replacing it, that is.)

The door numbers being ripped off had nothing to do with signs on the doors. It was a separate act.

Actually, we do not know why the person decided to remove the door numbers. We can speculate that it was because he felt the hotel was somehow "wrong" in removing the furry door signs. Or he might simply have been a moron.
Hopefully he won't come back.

While the way the signs were removed was a little .. err.. rude ..I understand why they did'nt like them too much..
and IF it WAs the reason the number removing was done I'd say that person has strange views on life

That only happened after the hotel had closed and was about to be demolished. At that point nobody really cared what happened to the doors.

permalinkOkay, we don't have all the details worked out yet, but Security will have available some very keen blank wide door knob hanger cards that we'll have for sale at a very reasonable price.
Perfect for making signs for your hotel room doors and perfectly compliant with the rules.

How about for AnthroCon 2008.. Get a big Jump start on it..
And make it a good Size and like in your face type of PIC..
Like I didn't get Stuffed Full Anuff From last year..
And stick with the "It's a jungle out there..!!.."
You can make a pre made Jungle Boarder and just put the Pics in the center or do a full like dinner Plate on a tree stump type of thing..

No, but would be really helpful at times
One of my must-dos at a con is to walk the floors with a friend the second night and check out all the doors. Think this year I might do a door poster for everyone in the room..... Only it probally wouldn't be seen much if the room is a suite or in another hotel.
Edit: apparently using the brackets to make a face will eliminate the rest of your post

What kind of door handles are at the Westin and how much clearance is there on the right side of the handle to hang a sign? Does anyone have some pictures or perhaps a design template for a hanging sign?
