AC '09: Furs In the Video Game Industry panel: Back, badder, and better

Second verse, same as the first:

I was amazed at the turnout to my Furs In the Video Game Industry panel at AC '08. I was even more amazed at the fact that although one of the planned panel members was a no-show, I ended up with something like three additional panel members that just showed up and asked to participate. Far from being unwelcome, I was amazed, impressed, and flattered that people would ask to participate!

With that in mind, I'm bandying around the idea of making the panel a regular thing. My plan is to get more panelists by getting the word out farther and earlier, and to also try to secure an hour and a half for the panel so that there's more time for audience questions.

So, readers, what say you?

EDIT: Also, if you're volunteering to participate in the panel, PLEASE contact me via one of the following alternate means:

Was watching some ventriloquist (sp) vids on youtube with a frined and I thought; hey, why hasn;t there been a pawpet improve or open mic yet? Well maybe in the past or another con but I'm not aware of any. I'd like to see that, I think it'd be a great show before Kage's storyhour

Handwashing- fear the glowing bacteria!

Handwashing and the prevalence of con-crud came up in another thread which reminded me of this.

One of the standard tricks for teaching people in the health and food service fields about how to wash hands properly is the old glowing germ powder bit. It adheres to bacteria on your hands and will glow brightly under a blacklight. So you have a volunteer apply, then blacklight their hands. Watch the disease GLOW. Let them go wash and see if they missed spots.

A bottle of the powder and a black light can be grabbed in a kit for about $20. (or if there's furs that work in health care, they may be able to borrow the light and powder for demonstration)

Adding that to the "your First Furry Con" panel might be nice and help cut down on some of the con crud.

For those having trouble picturing this, here's a video on youtube for teachers that want to do it in the classroom:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HE_y-UHmlWI

Idea for anthrocon 2009, a microcontroller programming panel

I would be interesting in hosting one, and providing help. a couple of things though..

I'm not rich, so I couldnt afford to give free dev kits :>

each person would need a laptop as well..

my ideas are as follows.

each furson interested would pay for a seat, but that would get them a devkit to take home

I'm into the parallax propeller right now, which isn't super expensive but isn't super cheap either.

is there any interest at all? I use the parallax basic stamp 2 in my animatronic wings, but the propeller is so much better its over kill for my wings, but I'm using it to replicate the Chroma tail

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SkjWLaJbILQ

Masquerade Idea -- A few questions and a recruitment call

Before I launch into this, I'd like to say I was thoroughly entertained by the two "prop instrument" performances. This isn't a bash on those in any way.

With that out of the way, here's my idea for 2009: REAL INSTRUMENTS.

My question: How feasible is a real electric instrument on stage? I'm thinking one electric guitar, probably one electric bass, and drums if at all possible, plus vocalist.

Recruitment call: I'd rather not spoil the songs I have in mind this early, but if anyone's interested please contact me through email or AIM (see my profile). We'd definitely need to contact an artist for permission, so the earlier the better.

Yello Fello furs

I was able to help Dex and Tek-Fox with this program.

I was kinda hopin there would be a little more organization for each move set.
Like first do 2-step,then poppin,etc.
Have a firm plan before it starts because the room started to die out after a few minutes in there probably because iot seemed like we didnt know what we were doin
(Plus the little take over by JD Puppy and his crew.....If you were there you know)
Hopefully we can try some new things next yr....I will ponder on this

Also have some water at the ready too........

ALSO IF ANYONE HAS A VIDEO OF THE FURSUIT DANCE 101....PLEASE LET ME SEE IT!!!!

AND..... DEX!!! IF YOU ARE ON HERE...CALL ME!!! I GAVE YOU MY CARD!!! I KNOW IT!!!

Mr Furry Universe Contest?

Something I've thoght about for the past couple days. I see alot of overweight and skinny furs at AC and about half of them their fursonas have big manly muscles. So I propose a bodybuilding competition for next you. I mean you literally have 365 days till the enxt AC and that's plenty of time to do somethign right? I've seen pics of furs who workout and look like thier fursona but I think we'd see more if there was some kind of prize up for grabs. So how about it? Think we can *ahem* muscle a Mr. Furry Universe contest into the programming?

My only consern is with this being a "furry" con the participants would feel a bit out of place if they had to go on stage human, and if not the scalies and phinnys (orca/dolphin) would take it. But like I said why not? It'll give the fandom a reason to stop looking at FA and get in shape. Make thinks easier when fighting off the aliens!

Video Taken By The Con - Where Can I Get it?

Hello a fan of the place here. As I have been going around the con the past two days there are plenty of cameras going around but there it is done by a few people that work as volunteers for the convention. Same goes in the ballroom when the open mike comedy was up. I'd like to know if someone was actually recording all that because there was some real funny stuff being said by people with no time to prepare for something like that. Anyone care to fill me in if its gonna be sold as a DVD or was it strait to broadcast?

Pre-Anthrocon Programming Thanks

Hi everyone!

Well, Anthrocon 2008 is just around the corner...literally! It's only a few days away. All of our events and panel requests are in, the pocket programs and programming guides are being printed and assembled, and I have been in contact with our representatives at the convention center, the Westin, and the Anthrocon operations/technical contacts to get everything in place.

This has been a challenge. We've never had more programming and events, or more spaces to hold them than we have this year. As I've said in the past, Anthrocon's programming is the result of the combined time and talent of the members who actually host the events. This isn't about any one person, this is a collective effort. As such, I want to take a moment to thank each and every person who is hosting a panel or event. Without each of the following, Anthrocon would simply not be what is is:

WHAT WILL YOUR GIRLFRIEND SAY WHEN SHE LEARNS IT’S 50% LONGER, 15% HIGHER, 30% DEEPER THAN BEFORE AND ROCK SOLID?

This year the Puppetorium moves from Room 305, (just across from the Spirit of Pittsburgh Ballroom), its home for the last two years, to larger more expansive digs. To get to Rooms 315 – 316 just turn left as you leave the elevator and continue 150 feet past the corridor to the Dealer’s Den/Art Show.

To celebrate our new larger location we’ve created a new, larger puppet stage!

Come join us as we welcome PA Pets!

Hailing from Mechanicsburg, PA, they perform a live webcast every Saturday from 7pm to 11pm, (as well as Sundays from 5pm to 9pm when The Funday Pawpet Show does not air). Go to their homepage, http://papawpets.org/ , and see for yourself. (No webcast from Anthrocon – sorry)

Brief Question Reguarding Mature Art Policy

So I was reading through the Artist Alley rules and such, and I've a brief question regarding the display of mature artwork. At previous conventions I've attended, all mature artwork was required to have fig leaf coverings. However from what I understand after reading the rules here, that is not required PROVIDED that all mature artwork is in a separate and clearly marked binder or portfolio that minors cannot access, furthermore that mature artwork may be displayed openly PROVIDED it DOES have a fig leaf. Am I interpreting these rules correctly?

Masquerade music licensing

Hi all! I've been working on a 2D animation project for my own amusement/experience, and, if the rough is completely ready by Anthrocon, would like to show it.

From what I understand, the Masquerade is the event to offer it at, as it's for (a) costume performances and (b) visual media skills - I remember an AMV being shown at it last year.

And, according to the rules, I'm gonna need to get a sync license from Universal Music Publishing Group to do so. ( http://www.anthrocon.org/rules-masquerade )

Okay, so far, everything's fine.

What I am confused about, is exactly what I should be putting on the application. UMPG has a licensing site, http://www.synchexpress.com/licensing.aspx - with a number of licensing options that would make a lot more sense if I was actually trying to sell this project, rather than trying to show it for no $ at a talent show at a nonprofit organization!

Do I select-

Drumcircle anyone?

Greetings all!

At FC this past year and AC last year, I've seen some critters run around with instruments of various sorts.

Especially with the Jungle Out There theme, would anyone be interested in a drumcircle/ open jam?

Most I've been to often include people dancing, singing, and just relaxing while listening.

I would be willing to to get things rolling, and have some extra percussion (shakers, a couple drums, tambourines, cowbells, etc.) I can bring. Have already run it through the official route via the programming form, but just wanted to see--informally--if there was any interest.

Even if nothing officially arises, perhaps whoever is around with instrus can have an informal jam at the Con at some point.
No matter what, I'll still bring my djembe and doumbek.
Will be there Thursday evening (got to catch the Celtic music!) through Sunday.

Cheers!

Hey all,

I just wanted to let everyone know that the Schedule for this year's Anthrocon is just about complete. I'm reviewing some final events and the rooms that they will go in.

We should be able to post that information to folks VERY soon.

I want to take a quick moment to thank all of our panel volunteers and event coordinators for their time and efforts. We have well over 100 panels, events, and presentations scheduled for this year's Anthrocon scheduled among 15 different rooms throughout both the Westin Hotel and the Lawrence Convention Center with more still being finalized. This doesn't include the fantastic array of dealers in the dealer room and the great art show that will also be in Exhibit Hall C.

Coming down to the wire!

Hey all.

Another quick update from your Programming puppy. Anthrocon is coming up fast! Less than 40 days away! Can you believe it?!?!

Well, I've received quite a number of panel requests in the last week with folks wanting to know if it's too late to get a panel in the schedule.

Short answer is: It's not too late. I'm still accepting panel requests. Now here's the caveat. Many popular timeslots are filled. So in the form that I send anyone, I am still asking folks to indicate a preferred time/day, but I can't promise that I can get everyone the exact timeslot they want. (I'll do my aabsolute best though!)

So..if you want to contribute to Anthrocon programming, don't be shy! We still have places available for many panels and SIGs! Some really interesting and exciting ones have come in recently.

Some things you can look forward to:

Survey Discussion

Dr. Gerbasi has another survey for this year's Anthrocon, along with something to scan hands in for research purposes. I thought she had wanted to try and discuss it sometime on Sunday, after all the surveys had been turned in but I'm not sure if she ever actually set anything up. Does anyone know?

Display cases for 3-D works?

I've read in the Art Show packet that Display cases are now recommended (because of theft issues) for 3-D works on tables.

I have quite a few small sculptures that I would like to keep safe, and one larger one. Anyone have any ideas as to where I can get inexpensive dispay cases that won't break the bank?

I've already checked all of the art/craft stores in my area (especially AC Moore and Michaels) and their cases are too awkward or too small for the sculptures.

Thanks!

Furs in the video game industry panel: Confirmed!

Just to give everyone a heads-up, just the other day my proposition for a "Furs in the Video Game Industry" panel was confirmed!

No time or date yet, but I can tell you that the following people are going to be (or expected to be, based on responses from the other two threads) part of the panel:
- Me: East coast perspective
- DevioX: Texas perspective
- Caroo: Aussie perspective
- Foxberance: UK perspective
- Charlie Kellner / Legend the Gryphon: Historical perspective

The panel will be one hour long. Each of us on the panel will have around five minutes to describe who we are, why we got into the industry, *how* we got into the industry, and any advice we have for people wishing to get into the industry. Any remaining time will be general Q&A between the audience and panel members.

I look forward to attending!

Any questions?

Quick Programming Update

Hi everyone!

Anthrocon programming is shaping up quite nicely this year. We have some really interesting and innovative new panels being done this year. In the fandom track, we have something new: The Husky Meet and Greet. That's right, some dedicated husky fans are putting together a panel to meet, talk about, and generally celebrate huskies and husky characters. Like last year, we also have a fun "Foxes Abound" panel. Several other panels about other animal and regional species are in the works. In our Science and technology track, we now have scheduled a panel for the "RoboFurs". These are robot entusiasts who have anthropomorphic robots as toys and virtual pets. This is a first for us, and we're very happy to add this wonderful new panel to our lineup.

What happens on June 26th?

A friend of mine said that 26th was some sort of "pre-con" day. The opening ceremonies weren't until the 27th.

I don't know what happens for sure on that day. Could you clear it up for me?

art show proxy question

Art Show Matting Question

I am a bit confused over what type of matting/framing I should purchase for my work. After reading the information packet provided I know it is necessary for displaying the work. I'd like something that won't interfere with the clips used on the peg boards, but I have run into too many choices on all the art supply sites I've seen.

Is there anyone who has participated in the art show in previous years who can offer a suggestion on which brand or type of matting to use?

Something simple may be best as I am a first time participant in the show. Also many of the matting choices do not include backing with the Frames/Matting, and I have not seen anything to suggest they are sold separately or listed in a separate section of art supplies.

Masquerade Question

Hello,

I read the FAQ and I know it says you must remain backstage until your performance, but do you have to stay there when you're done? (it says you return to "rest and recuperate"...mandatory? ) I would really like to see at least a few acts! How is the view from backstage? Can you hear much?

Thanks,

Tory

Furries versus Zombies

I don't know when they'll get me. I can feel them watching me during the day, when I eat, when I walk to class, when I go to clubs. They know where I am, they know where I sleep, they know all my friends. They want to feed...

For those who aren't familiar, this is humans versus zombies! I'm currently playing here at school, and it's been a blast to tag people and see who's involved in this game! (You can find the Wikipedia link for more information.)

Currently, I'm wondering if the directors might be open to hosting an adaptation of HvZ -- Furries versus Zombies -- at Anthrocon this year with a small bunch of people (maybe two or three dozen). It's a great way to meet completely new people, can be a con-exploring event, and otherwise be a lot of fun! I'd love to hear back from any of the staff for this year on their input and thoughts, even if it might be possible for the future, if not this year!
