How our webserver performed under a heavy load
Posted by Giza (Douglas Muth) on Wed, 2010-02-03 01:36|
Looking back after this morning's stampede, I thought I'd share with folks how the webserver held up, since I know I am not the only geek out there. And, truth be told, I was a bit nervous myself, since I wasn't quite sure just how much traffic we would get and if the webserver would survive, or turn into a smoking crater. Well, here's what we got: The first hump is a manual backup I did last night. The second is the automatic backup that runs every morning, where the database and files are rsynced to a machine at another data center. The third hump at 9 AM was when we opened hotel reservations. 1.4 Megabits/sec doesn't look too bad, until you look at: |

A few new tweaks to the site
Posted by Giza (Douglas Muth) on Sun, 2010-01-31 21:40|
Hi folks, I made a few new tweaks to the website today. First, we have now have a currency converter for our international members. It can be found under the "Travel Information" section at http://www.anthrocon.org/currency. Second, we hate spam. We really hate spam. In an effort to more quickly deal with the occasional spammer who shows up, we added the ability to flag any post or comment as "spam" or "inappropriate". An email will be sent to our website team who will then investigate. Note that you must be logged in to flag posts. We also introduced the ability to send private messages between users. Go to http://www.anthrocon.org/messages to view your private messages or send a new private message. Finally, we added a bookmarking feature. If you are logged in, the bottom of each post will have a link titled "Bookmark this". Clicking that will add the post to your list of bookmarks. To view your bookmarks, head over to http://www.anthrocon.org/bookmarks. Any questions? Let me know! |
What is this?
Posted by Exkhaniber on Sat, 2010-01-09 08:40|
Perhaps I missed something important because I haven't logged on here in like two weeks... But there's something in the lower-right part of my browser and it is making me worried. I do not recall signing up for or downloading anything new. So...why is this here and how do I get rid of it? It has to be part of the site because it knows I'm logged in. |
Buddy List?
Posted by J Fox on Fri, 2009-12-04 00:12|
Alright, somewhere on this thing is supposed to be a buddy list. I'm pulling my ears out trying to locate it with no success. If anybody knows what I'm talking about or can confirm it's been removed for some reason or another I'd appreciate it, thanks. |
Forum navigation and heirarchy (and other nitpicks)
Posted by Vulpes Rex on Tue, 2009-09-22 03:43|
Up at the top of this pane or frame or whatever you call this section of the page, is the following: Home >> Forums >> Forums >> ... How come suddenly _2_ "Forums" where there had once been one? Is there a material difference, and if so, couls it be differentiated by either a suffix or an adjective? ...And what became of our formatting options - you know, the "quote" and "Bold Text" and "Italic Text", etc? Finally - under "User Menu", we now have to open "My Account" to be able to access (and conveniently track) those forum topics in which we have made posts; can the old display be restored, so that we do not have to go through the "My Account" page? PS - What does "Split summary at cursor" mean or do? |
Suggestion: Different Formatting for Signatures
Posted by Softpaw (Natasha Softpaw) on Tue, 2009-08-04 22:32|
Hiya! There's something that's been bugging me about Drupal's forum code for awhile now, and I was wondering if anything could be done about it. When users have signatures set here, instead of appending them during page generation like most forums, it adds them to the post/comment body itself when posting. This creates two problems. Problem #1, some users neglect to put spacing between their post and their signature, or in some cases, they don't even put their message on top of the signature. And, problem #2 (which is an extension of #1 in some cases), since the signature is indistinguishable in appearance from normal text, there's no way to tell whether the end of the post is a signature or an out-of-place tagline unless one reads multiple posts by the same person. This is also an issue with a lot of users not really understanding how to make a signature make sense in a system like this, but that's not something that can be solved by technical means. |
