This year Anthrocon, in conjunction with the Gateway Clipper Fleet, is offering two Fursuit-Friendly Cruises.

  • Both cruises will be occurring on Thursday, June 29th.
  • Boarding will take place at the Convention Center Riverfront Plaza.
  • Ticket prices will be $17 each and space will be limited.
  • A complimentary bottle of water will be offered to all passengers and long straws will be supplied for use by fursuiters.
  • The boats have both open decks and closed air conditioned decks so the cruises will be sailing rain or shine.
  • You do not need a con badge to board the cruise. However, you will need your cruise tickets for boarding, whether it be in hard copy or electronic format.

Afternoon Fursuit-Friendly Cruise

Sailing on the Gateway Clipper Fleet Empress
Boarding begins at 2:30pm EDT Thursday June 29th
Ship sails at 3:00pm EDT
Returns to the dock at 4:00pm EDT
Capacity: 400

Sunset Fursuit-Friendly Cruise (Sold Out)

Sailing on the Gateway Clipper Fleet Princess
Boarding begins at 7:30pm EDT Thursday June 29th
Ship sails at 8:00pm EDT
Sunset at 8:54pm EDT
Returns to the dock at 9:00pm EDT
Capacity: 250

The sunset cruise will be sailing past PNC Park during the Pirates game.  Perhaps we can get noticed and put up on the Jumbotron!!!

Please note that at this time the Sunset Fursuit Friendly Cruise is sold out. If there are cancellations for this cruise the tickets will be made available for sale.

**Fursuit-Friendly Cruise Refund Policy**

  • The deadline to request a refund for the Fursuit-Friendly cruise is June 18th, 2017 at 11:59pm EDT. Refund requests after this time will not be granted.
  • The cruises will set sail rain or shine. If conditions on the river itself prevent a safe departure and the cruise is cancelled, refunds will be issued for that cruise.
  • Refunds will not be issued if you miss the boarding time for your cruise.
  • Refund requests must made by email to refunds@anthrocon.org.  We need your LEGAL NAME, EMAIL USED FOR PURCHASE, CRUISE THAT TICKETS WERE PURCHASED FOR and NUMBER OF TICKETS PURCHASED to properly identify you for a refund. We cannot accept refund requests made by PM on the website, by Twitter, by Facebook/G+ posts, or other methods.
  • Refunds must be approved/requested by the person who purchased the tickets.

For those who haven't been to that location, there are two ways to get there.

The first (and safest) is to walk down the curved path in the water feature between the two sections of the convention center.  The dock should be directly in front of you.

The second method is to leave the convention center and turn toward the river away from the direction to the Westin.  Cross the street toward the river and follow the path to the right.  The path will turn left, then turn left again and go down the path.

Both directions are ramps and are handicapped accessible.  I can't speak for the actual boarding of the cruise ship.

I highly recommend this. We've been going on the Gateway Clipper cruises almost every year since our first AC in 2009. They are a great way to view the city and very relaxing.

Actually K.P. is the one that deserves more thanks than I.  He is the one that got all this started as a possibility, I just worked on getting the ticketing page set up and making this post for it.

Not much happens on Thursday at the convention. Thursday is mainly a day for setting up and picking up con badges at registration.  There are a couple things that do occur such as the pre-con mixer and pre-con dance along with a very limited number of panels (see https://anthrocon2016.sched.com/ for an example of what happened Thursday last year).

Also to note: You do not need to have your con badge to get on the cruise, you will just need to present your ticket for the cruise.  That means people wanting to take the afternoon cruise will not need to pick up their con badges from registration beforehand.

There won't be any major events happening as both cruises are on Thursday. So don't worry you won't miss any major events on either cruise.

Do you think there would be enough lighting for amateur photos (namely, using a smartphone camera) taken on the sunset cruise to come out well? I'm trying to decide which option would be best to book.

Not to worry.

As Nicona correctly wrote above, sunset on June 29 is at 8:54.  Six minutes before the end of the cruise.  And it doesn't really start to get dark until a good half an hour or more after that.

Yes.  There will be plenty of light for even the most basic of cameras on the cruise.  And pictures taken around sunset are the best!  Especially if you can catch the setting sun reflected in the water.  If I decide to take the cruise, I am looking forward to snapping many pictures and shooting much video!

Also.  Speaking as someone who has a bit of experience with watercraft.  (Well duh!  I'm an otter.  OF COURSE I know my way around a boat!)  My favorite time to be on board any vessel is during a sunset cruise!

This sounds like a job for K.P.  Who is our new Public Outreach director.  (AKA:  PR guy.)  And when your job is PR, it's your job to alert the media.

Yeah, K.P..  You should totally give the stadium a call and tell them that somewhere between 8 and 9 o'clock there might be something very cool and VERY photogenic steaming by the stadium during the game.

And, after contacting my roomie to see if he wanted to go, I just bought two tickets on the sunset cruise!

This is gonna be fun!

I would have preferred a Sunday cruise. (Would have put a nice relaxing coda on my AC weekend.)  But Thursday is almost as good!

Quote by Chief Brody from the movie JAWS:

You're gonna need a bigger boat!

Just checked the ticket sales on the two cruises, and the sunset cruise (150 capacity IIRC) has only 34 berths remaning.

While the afternoon cruise (400 capacity) has only 16 signups.

Methinks that the Gateway Clipper Fleet should swap boats, and assign the bigger one to the sunset cruise.

Just a suggestion from your friendly neighborhood space-pirate OttAAAAAAR. Eye-wink Smiling

It is not that easy.  W got the boat that were available for the times that are indicated.  The larger boat may not be available for the evening cruise.

Oh well...  What will be, will be.

Doesn't really matter all that much to me.  Me and my roomie already have our tickets for the sunset cruise. Eye-wink

But if the sunset cruise does sell out:

A:  There will be furs that will be disappointed that they couldn't get a ticket.

B:  The Gateway Clipper Fleet will be losing money on every unsold ticket.

As I mentioned above, I have a bit of experience with watercraft.  And there is an old saying among boat owners:  "A boat is a hole in the water, into which you throw money!"  I assume that the Gateway Clipper Fleet is a for-profit buisness?  And with only 16 tickets sold (so far) for the afternoon cruise, I am sure that they will be losing money on that one.  Especially if they will be using the bigger boat.

Again, just a friendly suggestion from a space-pirate otter.

Are tickets on those two boats being offered just to Anthrocon attendees? Because if so, I really like the idea of a cozy little sunset cruise just for furries.

It states in description that membership/badge is NOT required for any of the cruises. It's simply a cruise that will start at the DLCC Waterfront and will accept fursuiters. I imagine a few of passerbys will get on that boat just because of colorful suits.

Edit: I hope that in the following years (If the event repeats) They will schedule a bigger boat for the evening cruise, maybe even drop the afternoon one. As far to my (little) knowledge most people will be tired from traveling or still traveling around that time.

I just meant whether those two particular cruises had tickets being offered through other venues. If the only way to buy tickets was through the Ticketspice page linked above, and that link was only shared here on the Anthrocon page, it would mean only Anthrocon attendees would have been the ones buying the tickets.

The problem is that during the earlier cruise, people are checking into hotels, getting badges, thinking about dinner. That was our  main reason for picking the later one as I suspect many others. If the 3pm cruise was any other day it would probably attract more people.

To answer a few questions/comments that have been posted:

The Gateway Clipper Fleet will not be losing any money on this venture.  Anthrocon has hired the boats from the Gateway Clipper Fleet. We were able to hire the boats that were available for the specific times. The larger boat was most likely not available for the evening cruise which would also be the reason why we cannot swap boats between the cruises.

Quote:

The only way to purchase tickets for these cruises are through the Anthrocon TicketSpice page. We have only been advertising on the AC forums and through Anthrocon social media at this point. Anthrocon membership badges are not required to buy tickets for the cruises. As we get closer to the con if the afternoon cruise does not sell enough tickets for us to cover our costs we may look to other means of getting the word out about the cruise.

This year is very much an experiment for us with the regarding these cruises. We will be looking very closely at how the cruises do this year to determine what we may do in future years, whether it be changing/limiting the cruises offered or whether we even continue to offer them at all.

Does this mean that even if there are still spaces available when the cruise sets off we can't buy tickets right there?  We have to do it online?

All sales will be through TicketSpice, yes. For this year as we're feeling things out, we've got to keep it simple; that means no cash-handling or point-of-sale tickets.. I'm not sur e what our closedown date is for ticket sales, but I'm guessing june 18th, as that's the last possibel refund date.

As both Chiaro and I have stated all ticket sales will be handled through TicketSpice.  All ticket sales will need to be done online, either through PC or mobile device. We will not have any physical location for people to buy tickets with cash.

At this time I have it set up so tickets can be purchased up until about 20 minutes before departure time (10 minutes after boarding begins). This will allow for some last minute purchase of tickets.

I thought Anthrocon wasn't allowed to sell tickets to things like this.  I'm pretty sure that was said back when someone had the idea to charge admission for some AC event.

I have updated the original post but will also state it here.

The Sunset Fursuit-Friendly Cruise is currently sold out.  If someone cancels (requests a refund) for the sunset cruise the tickets will be made available for sale.

We still have plenty of space available for the Afternoon cruise.

Posting another update, we still have plenty of tickets available for the Afternoon Fursuit Friendly Cruise.

And for those of you who have purchased tickets, you MUST have your tickets, either printed or on your mobile device, in order to board the boat.  The confirmation email that you received is NOT your ticket. Your tickets will have a QR code on them. Please make sure that you bring your tickets with you.  I would hate for you not to be able to get on the cruise because you did not have you ticket with you. If you have not printed your tickets or sent them to your mobile device and need the link to your tickets you can email me at registration[AT]anthrocon[DOT]org and ask for the link so you can print/text your tickets. Also, you do not need to have your con badge to board the boat, just your ticket.

One more question:

Can you BYOB (and nosh) on the cruises?  B'cus this here Pirate Otter be a needin' his grog when he be a sailin' teh boundin' main!  (Or the muddy waters of the Allegheny, Ohio, and Unpronunceable rivers!)  (Actually, it is easy to pronounce.  But quite difficult to spell correctly. Sticking out tongue )

But seriously.  Pennsylvania's liquor laws are a bit, ummm... Antiquated?  And although a quick look at The Gateway Clipper Fleet's website seems to indicate that there is a snack-bar and a full service bar on their vessels, since this is a special charter, who knows what they will be offering?

Anyway, this otter would much prefer to bring his own booze and nosh, instead of having to pay through the muzzle for whatever cheap watered-down drek that that kind of concession all-too-often provides. Barf!

Going on the actual cruise, you would not be able to bring your own drinks aboard, and this isn't based off of a state law or anything, this is based on the Gateway Clipper's own guidelines and rules, no outside food or beverage is permitted on their premises.

First of all:  Thanks, Thorfax, for your quick response Smiling

Second of all:  Yep.  That's what I kinda' figured.

But I was curious (as, I am sure, were other furs) so I decided to ask.

Here's hoping that the boat's bar has at least ONE top-shelf rum.  (But I am COMPLETELY prepared to be disappointed. Sad )

First, it will depend on what time Mr. Adler arrives.  He may not arrive in time to attend the afternoon cruise (if he takes off at a West Coast time of noon, it's already 3:00 PM on the East Coast).  There's also (usually) a Staff dinner on Thursday night, IIRC.  That could also interfere with the cruise.

If someone has seasick tendencies, or general motion sickness, they should probably think twice about going on the cruise. Someone would have to have really bad motion sickness to get sick on the boat, though.
