Attention Fursuiters! It's getting closer to Anthrocon and we know there are lots of things going on. So we wanted to take a few minutes to address something things we know are important! While we are posting this here as well there will be print copies of this availalbe at the Programming Office in the Westin's Washington Room!

Fursuit Badges!

To get a Fursuit Badge:

The suit must represent an "anthro" character.  Character representations of non-anthro characters, human characters, spandex bodysuits do not count.  At minimum, a headpiece, hand-paws, and a tail (if applicable by species); if using latex and makeup, it must completely cover exposed surfaces.  Skin must not be visible when the costume is worn, to complete the illusion of an anthropomorphic creature.  Remember, we have only a limited number of badges, which will be available outside of Operations in Room 309 of the convention center.

Fursuit Parade!

The Group Photo:

Character representations of non-anthro characters, human characters, spandex bodysuits, etc. are politely requested not to join in.  Handlers are permitted for suits that require them, and for persons of limited mobility.  You must drink at least one full glass of water before joining the parade!  This is for your safety, and our sanity.  You may begin to line up for the parade in Hall A of the convention center as early as 1:00 PM.  The parade itself begins immediately after the group photo is taken, which will be at precisely 2:00 PM.  Please allow yourself plenty of time to get there.  Remember, the elevators cannot be trusted to get you there on time.

  • Water will be available.  Make liberal use of it!
  • If you are very tall, or have tall ears or antlers, please stay to the rear of the group.
  • Please line up with toes (or claws) on the tape lines that will be on the floor.
  • No showboating!  This photo is for everyone, not just for you.  Stay with the group.
  • Non-costumers must not try to “photobomb” the photo.  Your membership may be suspended if you do.
  • Handlers, please get out of camera shot while the photo is being taken
  • Hands must be kept down.
  • No flags, signs, or other items that may block the photo are permitted.
  • A portion of the front row is reserved for VIPS, young children and the physically challenged.
  • Remember, if you cannot see the camera, it cannot see you.

The Parade Itself!

There are many members of the general public present in both portions of the fursuit parade.  If you participate, you are representing not only Anthrocon, but Furry Fandom as a whole to the folks who have welcomed us so warmly to their city.  The parade is a showpiece for fursuit design and performance; it is not an opportunity for political statements or grandstanding. Any costume or accessory that is inappropriate for public view or is likely to cause shock or dismay to the good people of Pittsburgh will not be permitted to participate in the parade!

The outdoor portion of the parade takes place first and will involve a circuit of 10th Street underneath the Convention Center.  This is to provide maximum protection for our fursuiters from inclement weather or blazing-hot sun.

  • You do not need to go outside if you do not want to or are not up to it.  Anyone who wishes to remain indoors can simply wait for the head of the parade to come back inside and rejoin it as it proceeds into the Dealers’ Room.
  • Do not stop!  Keep moving!  If the person ahead of you stops, feel free to go around.
  • If someone wants a picture, do not stop to pose.  There will be a meet-and-greet afterward for photos.

The parade continues to the indoor portion once it re-enters the convention center and proceeds up the escalators.  There will be a left turn, after which the parade will do a partial circuit of the dealer’s room.  It will then exit, and proceed to its finish in Hall A, where water will be available.

  • You do not need to continue into the dealer’s room if you do not want to or are not up to it.  Anyone who wishes to finish after the outside portion can simply turn right at the top of the escalators and re-join the line as it proceeds into Hall A.

OPTIONAL! Post Parade Meet & Greet in Hall D!

If you have the energy and the willingness at the end of the parade, you may consider a meet-and-greet with the public.  Hall D (ground floor) of the Convention Center will be open to the public after the parade for photographs and mingling.  A portion will be cordoned off for fursuiters only; you can remain behind the rail so that people can photograph you.  There will be an opportunity to mingle with the crowd, but we strongly suggest you bring a handler.  To participate in the meet-and-greet, simply turn left after exiting the dealer’s room and take the elevator down to the street level.  Enter Hall D from the inside door.  Water will be available, as will a headless area.

Question, will there be a member of staff who will be helping fursuiters who want to mingle after the parade? Tried to join in last year but ended up very confused about where to go.

The meet and greet in Hall D is new this year so security and staff will be there to help get things going and direct furry traffic.

Couple questions:

1. What new measures are being taken to improve the pace of the parade? Last year, those of us toward the back of Hall A were waiting the better part of an hour to funnel out the door, and just as much time getting through the outdoor segment, marching in place or inching along at best. Half of us went largely unseen because we were filed into two lines; the "outer" line adjacent to the street and the onlookers, and the "inner" line that was hopelessly directed by security to cut corners at the end of the street and come back.

2. If I skip the parade, am I still welcome at the mingle in Hall D? I might rather save my energy for that!

We will not be using a marching band this year and instead will have local radio involved. This should cut down on the drag that occured lasrt year. We will be maintaining the double lines at a regular pace. With the addition of the inside portion we are asking everyone to keep moving and not to do any stop posing for pictures.

There should be no issues if you wish to join in Hall D and forgo the parade.

A FEW SUGGESTIONS: The way the parade route is depicted on the map is a bit confusing, especially where there are several overlaps and alternate routes all smooshed together just outside Hall B. Next year you might want to think about adding an inset map showing that particular area in larger detail.

Also, asking suiters to use a single elevator to travel from the second floor to Hall D is a guaranteed bottleneck - you're going to have HUNDREDS of suiters lined up for an elevator that will probably hold 5 or 6 tops. (I assume both nearby escalators will be bringing suiters up to the second floor so they won't be available) Are there any stairs near that elevator, or better yet, oversized freight elevators in Hall B that could take large numbers of suiters to Hall D directly below?

Here's another idea: how about directing suiters heading to Hall D from the 2nd floor to the down escalators that suiters leaving Hall A are using to reach street level? There's a walkway above and across the parted Red Sea (as I like to call it) that suiters coming off the escalator & heading to Hall D can use. (Security people would keep spectators from blocking the walkway.) When suiters at the front of the parade who want to head to Hall D reach those escalators, security could direct them to the right escalator with the left escalator exclusively for suiters still leaving Hall A. (This would minimize criss-crossing at the bottom of the escalators between suiters beginning to march and those heading to Hall D.)

It sounds a bit complicated but trust me, IMHO asking hundreds of suiters to line up for a single elevator is a really bad idea.

As Ashe said in the top post, they are picked up at room 309 in the Convention Center.

Fursuit Badges will be handed out after the parade (shortly after the main person finishes his run through). They will be available for at least 2 hours after the parade.

Do we have the hours for Fursuit Badge Pickup? I didn't like the Random pass out times last year.

I'm not staff, but I believe the 2 solid times fursuit badges are given out are right after the Opening Ceremonies and after the fursuit parade. That's what it was last year, at least. They still haven't announced any times for 2017.

My friend is attending the convention with her 12 year old daughter. We saw the parade last year and she loved it! She really wants to march in the parade with me (I will be in partial fursuit). Being 12 she doesn't own a fursuit, but will be wearing one of those animal onesies (kigurumi). Would it be super frowned upon for her to march? I was looking through my pictures from last year's parade and saw a few people marching out of fursuit, but maybe they were handlers?

For the photo she would not be allowed; however, she would be allowed to go in the parade.

How long will the meet and greet be open? After the fursuit parade, I am planning to go straight to Ops to pick up my fursuit badge, because that line can be a doozy and I don't want them to run out before they get to me. Will there be enough time to get one's fursuiter badge and then head over to the meet and greet?

We expect the Meet 'n Greet to be over around 4 PM, as that's when we need to clear the Hall. As mentioned above, you'll have time for both!

Actually, not quite. This is like one of those math problems that looks good on paper but doesn't quite work out in the real world.

Last year's parade was about an hour long - let's assume it's the same length this year. The first person leaves Hall A at 2 PM, which means the last person starts the route at 3 PM. Given that info, they wouldn't be finished until at least 4 PM, which means the people near the back of the pack would not have enough time to go to the meet and greet, let alone do something else beforehand.

But thank you for the time info! Now I know I really need to do my best to be in the front of the pack this year.

Thankfully for the marchers, that logic does not follow. The duration of the parade at a stationary point along it (such as the Hall A exit) does not imply the time it takes one marcher to complete the parade route. If it was expected to be an hour of marching nobody would do it. XD

The first time (anyone correct this if I'm wrong) is when opening ceremonies are completed and the CEO declares Disneyland op....er, I mean Anthrocon is open.

Usually there is already a long line of Fursuiters that skipped the opening ceremonies to get in line early and try to get a low badge number.

I think from there you can ask at that desk in front of the DLLCC ConOps on other times these will be passed out.

I also would like to add what was said above is you need to be wearing your Convention Badge as well in order to pick up a Fursuiter Badge..... you need to either have picked up your pre-reg con badge or completed registration on-site before getting in line for the fursuit badges.

Another question. What exactly is a fursuit badge? What does it do? Is it required to participate in the parade? This is my first anthrocon.

The fursuiter badges are a separate thing from your con badge and not required to be able to do anything. They're just a little bonus collectible that Anthrocon offers for fursuiters. They each have an individual number (as there is a limited supply) and each year's design changes to match the theme of the con. Some people try to collect specific colors or numbers. They will look like this this year!

This is my first time fursuiting at Anthrocon.  Do you need to be wearing your suit in order to registration for Fursuit Badge.  Sorry if this question is dumb

You need to be in suit to get the badge, but not to register for AC itself (two separate lines, and you don't want to be in suit for the latter, but need to be registered first before getting your badge).

Now that is interesting!  Tell us more!  Will they be broadcasting live?  And if so:  Call letters?  AM?  FM?  Frequency?

Also: That map IS a bit confusing.

Also also:  The marching band last year was damn cool! Cool

I have a bit of a concerning question.

Last year and the year before that, the esculators going from the main meet up hall to the outside portion of the parade were NOT turned off, causing a bit of a chaotic situation.

Not only was that dangerous for everyone, but it causes such a back up at the foot of the esculators that watchers and suiters alike got hurt.

What are you all doing to prevent this from happening this year?

I have a quick question about the parade. If someone only has a partial not a full fur suit, can they still participate in the parade?

Yes, Partials are fine for the parade. For the Fursuit Photo itself, you must have bare skin covered- which means no short-sleeved shirts with paws that only go to wreists, for example.

Nope the fursuit badge is free! You only need three things to get it:
1) Be wearing a fursuit
2) Be registered for the con and already have that badge
3) Wait in the correct line at the correct time

Just a suggestion based on my experience from last year's parade, but please emphasize to everyone before the parade begins the point you made above under 'The Pareade Itself'.

That being:

- Do not stop! Keep moving!  If the person ahead of you stops, feel free to go around.

The meet & greet after is a good idea but I can't imagine that if a child wants a high-five or a hug there won't be plenty of suiters that will stop regardless. The important part is if/when this happens, the rest of the line NEEDS TO KEEP MOVING. Stopping and starting will lead to collissions for anyone with limited visibility and severely delay the back of the line from getting out of the photoshoot area.

On a related note, please consider upgrading the bullhorn Kage uses to direct during the photoshoot. I couldn't understand a single thing he said last year. The ambient noice in the middle of the pack drowns out anything he says. You need a better PA system. I'd suggest whatever setup you use in the Dealer's room to announce closing time, etc.
