I've heard it rumored that there would be one or more open stage situations at the con, or at least that there were in the past. In the event of such an...event, how could i get in on that!? I do music (play guitar and sing, while a friend plays bass.

There is an Open Mic Comedy event planned for this year, but not a musical or general session. I'm somehow doubting that a comedy event would meet your needs. However, if it what you are looking for, then participation is on a first-come first-served basis.

There is also the Anthrocon Masquerade, but I don't think that would really be what you are looking for either. While there have been musical performances in the past, it is more oriented toward fursuiters.

Thank you for responding
Yeah, I found the comedy open-mic in my snooping. I COULD be the comedian with the guitar, but the funny songs I know aren't really appropriate for the con. I am however very much interested in attending said event (I love standup)

If the equipment is available or space is available I could sniff out interest for an open-mic performance event and babysit that at some point during the day.

well I (and any other musical fur around) would be very grateful!

If it helps to legitimize my interest, I do have SOME credentials I suppose. Besides my continued efforts on FA,
me and my friend Shiacoft have been making a name for ourselves on Second Life recently doing live accoustic shows, and would love to try and keep that energy going over the summer.

Well the point of open mic is to encourage folks without credentials to get up there and get performance experience, so no credentials is no concern.

Like anything at the con, it comes down to resources - is the room and sound equipment available? I imagine we could use almost the same equipment as the fursuit dance (those PA speakers and the microphone) but I would be hard pressed to say for sure if the resources will be available. We could also possibly use the same place the sandstone club occupies during the day, but once again I'm not sure.

Also, someone more well versed than me would have to point out whether or not the power considerations for that sort of event would be too much as I'm pretty sure AC's on a ticking meter. :] I'll look into this more, but I know it's a request that often comes up and hasn't happened so there may be circumstances preventing it from being done. No promises.

A lot of people (my self included) some times bring their guitars and sit around the zoo or other social areas and jam a bit, maybe unplugged, but its still a good time.

Unplugged is just fine! Anything I could do musical is great and if I can make some friends at the same time than that's just awesome. If you find me on FA (I'm "peppercoyote" there as well), you could send me a note and we could discuss this in more detail. Mostly, how big of a production is it carting around a guitar?

I think I can say with some safety that there will be opportunities for open mic performance in a more structured setting, as well.

I would love to attend any informal jam sessions! I'll bring my guitar along just in case I come across one. I have only been playing a few months. I am so happy to be able to strum a few chords and sing along. I can play five songs now!! And of those five, three I play kind of passingly okay. The other two need work... that F#min is too much of a stretch for me... I'm certainly not ready for prime time, but I love to play and sing and could even do one song if there is an open mic.

There will be an open mic for certain, it will be in the Sandstone Club, the time will be available on the convention schedule but offhand I believe it's Friday night at 10:30 (don't quote me on that.)

Awesome! Would it be the thing listed in the schedule as "The Groove" in the Sandstone club until 2AM?
Thanks!

It's part of the overall event known as 'the groove.' For reasons somewhat unclear to me, the room is known as 'The Sandstone Club' and the time blocked in it is known as 'The Groove.' Open mic is specifically between 10:30 and midnight on Friday and the rest of the time in that room is occupied with awesome live music and chillout DJs. :]

More questions! I have never done an open mic before so I am clueless. In fact, I have only been playing guitar for about 4 months now, but I can play (and sing) easy stuff passingly well, and I have a song I've been working on ESPECIALLY for this event! So, does one have to get there super early and sign up? Or do you just get in line rather than sign up? So again, should I get there super early to make sure to get a spot? (I would hate to be shut out due to not being early enough after working on this song.) Or is there generally not such a huge crowd of folks dying to get up and play (or sing, dance, read poetry, tell jokes, whatever) that I don't really need to worry about not getting on? Also, do you have to audition?
My concern with getting there early is because I do want to slip away from the con from like 8-9:30 to see some friends playing a show close by. I want to see them, but I want to make sure to get back in time to be part of the open mic!
Thanks so much for any advice!

Protocollie, thank you SO MUCH for putting together the open mic!!!!!!!!!!!!
Getting up on stage, dressed as a dragon and playing "Puff the Magic Dragon" for other furries was THE biggest thrill of my life! That was my first time ever playing for other people (besides just a few friends or family that is) and I was so excited I could hardly breathe.
I will keep practicing and hopefully play something even better next year.
I really enjoyed listening to the other acts, they were great. I wanted to stay longer but my friend was dying to get a beer and go to the rave.
Thanks for all your time and work setting up awesome events like that!

It needs tweaking, but I'll try and fit it in the schedule. Its current location this year was not appropriate, but it did have a fair amount of interest - I'm going to work on figuring it out. Obviously, as next year rolls around, we'll have more firm details.
